U-gun rear sight location

Getting a Wichita MK40 7INT with the Wichita 4 position adjustable rear sight. This sight is mounted at the rear of the receiver instead of the more normal location at the front of the receiver. I was wondering if there is any advantage/disadvantage where the rear sight was located. I suspect at the very rear a shooter may see more movement of the gun where over the front of the receiver the sight would be more at the balance point (this is a center grip gun) so the rear sight may not appear to move as much. Of course a more forward mounted rear sight would mean the front sight is more toward the muzzle so would the movement show up in the front sight then or being further away from the shooter's eye the movement might not show up as much. I have always used U-guns with sights at the front of the reciever and wondered about pros/cons of the placement of the rear sight. Any shooters out there with experience with both sight setups to let me know the differences? I don't think a rear grip gun would make any difference but I have never shot a rear grip gun to know if that is true or not. Thanks,

A lot of it depends on your own eyesight. You may be better able to focus on the sights when they are mounted on the front receiver bridge than on the rear. Your prescription may vary from what others see. I have used both, and with my eyes, the front receiver location works best on a center-grip stock. With a rear grip stock and the sights mounted in the same locations, the actual distance from your eye to the rear sight blade is substantially shorter. This may affect how well your eyes can focus on the sight picture. You will also see more light on either side of the front blade, as the closer mounting makes the rear notch appear wider. You may have to increase the thickness of the front blade to compensate for this.

Haven't gotten the gun yet so I guess I will just need to try it and find out if the sights are clear in the present location. I haven't shot much open sight the last few years due to my eyes changing so this gun may end up with a scope later anyway. Thanks for the info. Tonedaddy has too many bolt guns now. He really should start collecting revolvers!!!!! Those are the real challenge in shooting steel.

Craig, You need to put a WTB ad in the classifieds for a Ruger revolver. Don't worry about finding the Bomars for a Ruger. I put a Hamilton Bowen rear sight on mine and it is just as repeatable as a Bomar. Of course I don't have the hooded front sight but you can't have everything. Let me see how many revolvers you can collect! FAs, El Dorado's, Sevilles, Rugers, DWs, S&Ws, Colt Anaconda (44 Anaconda was great) and silhouette model VDs (NOT what you are thinking). Some great shooting revolvers out there for you.

I have been shooting the Bowen sight on my Ruger Super Blackhawk for years. Very good sight and very repeatable settings. I had a Bomar/hooded front sight combo on my SBH but converted back to the standard front blade and the Bowen rear. Didn't like the Bomar sticking way up in the air. Try the Bowen, you won't regret it.
