7mmTCU boolit tragectory/drop-200 meters

Post by tim josey »

I'm shooting my 1st match this Sat. I don't have anything longer than a 25 yard indoor range to signt this in. I have a TC in 7mmTCU shooting a Lee 130 grain cast TL boolit. w/24 gr. 4895 & cci primer. I used an 8" target and I'm using the 6:00 hold to hit the center- about 4" high. Does anybody have a guesstimate on how much drop this load has and any other info would be appreciated. Sights are open post & notch. I will eventually get a scope of some kind in the future for my 60 year old eyes. Aslo what would be a good scope in the 150- 200 dollar range.

Thanks

That really helps me. I didn't have an idea where to start. I don't expect to do very well, but I would like to at least luck in to hitting a few and this gives me at least some idea if I can do my part LOL.
Any others want to add their ideas?
Thanks

Tim I took time to runs some numbers
and this is just est-guess because I don't know the B.C. of your bullet or your MV.
but keeping the 1600mv. of mine and switching to a 130gr.
to be
dead on @ 200 meters you will be 2.48" high @ 25 yrds.
dead on @ 150 meters you will be 1.42" HIGH @25YRDS.
DEAD ON @100 meters you will be .35" high @25 yrds.
google and find a free ballistic calculator and punch in some numbers it will real close

as far as scope a lot (including me) use the bushnell trophy or elite pistol scopes
I'm sure better help is on the way> just food for thought until they get here

Tim, Don't know if you are using a 10" or 14" barrel but you should be on the chicken using your 25 yard bullseye sightin. You might be in the top half of a chicken so watch your body/leg hold. Here is what I found works for me with new loads in my TCU and no real sight settings. Depending upon your hits on the chicken you might need one more for pigs (b/l again on pigs). I favor holding windage on the front leg of the pig or just to the belly side of the front leg since that gives me the hump to play with if I go high. I then try two clicks up for turkeys. MIght take three if you grip the gun real tight but that should get you into at least the bottom half of the turkeys. Out to rams I usually try four more clicks. Your 130 grain bullet is on the light side and will probably be shooting pretty flat so you may need five (or more) clicks to get centered on a ram. By all means take a spotter or beg someone to spot for you. I have shot too many matches without a spotter and guessed at sight settings. Sometimes it pays off but it is just a big guessing game if you don't connect on the first C, P, T or R. If you get a chance, try the RCBS 145 and 165 7mm moulds. They are very accurate in just about any 7mm gun. Never tried the Lee 130 but Lee moulds make some nice round bullets so you should get some decent accuracy with that bullet/load. Good luck at your first match. Let us know how things worked out. 7TCU is a great cast bullet cartridge. Lynn

You might play with this ballistic calculator http://www.handloads.com/calc/

I used velocity of 1800fps, sightin at 260 yards and .3 for the BC. This will leave you at 3.99in high at 27 yards.

At 55yards (50 meters) 7.77in high
110 yards (100 meters) 12.24 high
165 yards (150 meters) 12.32 high
220 yards(200 meters) 7.3" high

Looks like foot, foot, foot, belly to me.

Dropping velocity to 1700 fps added an extra inch of elevation
At 55yards (50 meters) 8.75in high
110 yards (100 meters) 13.75in high
165 yards (150 meters) 13.81in high
220 yards(200 meters) 8.16in high

Thanks again for all replies. I thought the 130 might be a little light, but its the only one that Lee offered. If it doesn't deliver i will look into the other brands. I won't have a spotter unless someone offers to help me. The open sights on this are not the best, and with aging eyes it will be a challenge. I will look into the scope mentioned for next months match.
I hope to have access to this range after next month so sighting in will be much easier.

Thanks again for all the info, looking forward to shooting again after 30 years!

Tim, By all means talk to the MD or whoever signs you in at the match and ask if anyone can spot for you. People are just as friendly and helpful now as 30 years ago and I'm sure someone would be happy to spot for you. I know the issue with the aging eyes and scoped guns have kept me shooting but I still try the iron sights every once in a while just for old time sake. Have fun and smell the powder and it will all be worth it. Good luck.
