How To Get Started

Post by ede »

Or what to use? In general I'd say I'm a revolver shooter for run and gun games and steel challenge. I'd also say I think I'd like to play this game with rimfire pistol. Not knowing anything I think a Contender would be fun or maybe even a bolt action pistol. I have a few nice 1911s but I doubt they'd work for this. My only other pistols that would work are revolvers or a few Ruger MkIIIs.

TC Condenders used to be THE gun for silhouettes in the heyday of IHMSA. With multiple barrels and calibers you can shoot all disciplines in big and small bore except for the Revolver classes. The only catch now for TCs is finding the 10" barrels to be legal for the Production type categories. Of course the Super 14 barrels will get you into the Unlimited classes. TCs are very accurate and are still very competitive. They are addictive and barrels have been known to multiple when locked in dark safes!!! I'm an old revolver shooter but have lately deferred to the bolt guns due to getting older and shakier. Still take a revolver out every once in a while to blow off the cobwebs. Silhouette shooting is fun since there are many guns and loads that will win the matches. You don't always need the latest high tech equipment to compete. Since this is an amateur sport, shooters are more than willing to spot for each other even though they are shooting against each other. They are also willing to lend guns, ammo, advice and anything else to help new shooters get started. This is about the most friendly shooting sport you will find.

Any adjustable sighted pistol whether it is scoped or open sighted will get you started. Go to a match and expect to have fun. Welcome to the forum :-bd . What part of the country are you in?

I live in Alabama, work for company in Texas and travel for work. Mostly I live in Comfort Inns. I'm watching a couple Contenders and spare barrels on Gunbroker. I think I'd like to use a Contender for this and if I don't like it I'll just sell everything and move on, or move on and have a couple more safe queens that never get used.

Baldwin County, on the gulf. There's a match here, think I seen Jackson, MS. has one and Pensacola too. No telling what's in Texas or what I might find in my travels.
