ANSCHÜTZ barrel replacement?

The bullets may be smaller but not the challenge.

ANSCHÜTZ barrel replacement?

Post by jrywho »

I have a 10" Exemplar in 22LR. I would like to have the barrel replaced to gain better balance for Unlimited Standing.
Any suggestions on what brand and who does quality work?

thanks

Here is one guy to start with. You should discuss barrel details with the gunsmith.

Thank you for the reply, I am also considering an XP-100 22LR conversion. I have sent an email to Evelio.

Any INFO on the conversion would be appreciated.

thanks, jrywho

Hi
Rick Zimmerman of DZ Arms in Oklahoma City can do a wonderful job of replacing the barrel on an Anschutz.

John,
Thanks for the INFO. I have seen Jim's Anschutz and presume DZ did the work. I have not heard back from Evelio and I may give Rick at DZ Arms a call. Will not need this work performed until the Regional match is complete. Enjoyed taking with you last weekend, thanks again

Remington actually built one XP in 22lr and a guy about 20 miles from me owns it. There is no amount of money that can buy it either. It just sits in a safe. Calfee was the only gunsmith to convert XPs to 22lr that I know of. One of our club members has a matching set of Calfees in 7BR and 22lr. Beautiful guns with engraving. Good luck finding a 22lr Calfee they are very scarce these days.

jrywho,

From a time and dollars standpoint and possibly results you would be ahead to build a new rimfire bolt action unlimited gun using one of the new actions that are available on the market today. The result would be a single shot like a converted XP but with a LH bolt like the Exemplar. Take a look at the 10-X, Turbo, Falcon, and Copperhead actions. More information on the actions available here: http://www.rimfireaccuracy.com/Forums/

Bill Calfee is no longer making them.

Years ago one of our local club members bought a Kimber 22lr action and had an unlimited gun built. I think his father made the stock and the gun in beautiful. He doesn't shoot it much but it is a very accurate gun.

Yes, this is what I heard as well. I have done a barrel replacement and trigger upgrade on a Ruger Charger. It will be great for UAS class but will never come close to the Exemplar or a custom XP conversion. My intent is to get a better balanced Unlimited Standing pistol which has a comparable trigger to the Anschutz. A clean and light breaking trigger in Standing is quite important.
I did received an response from Evelio Mc Donald and he can perform the barrel replacement but did not know what twist would be the best for sub-sonic ammo in our sport. I am still thinking about the options available including a different action starting from scratch as Kitsap suggested. My guess is that a 12" bull type barrel on the Exemplar would be perfect with a 4" Ken Light High rise.
If I could find a like new 14" Exemplar I would cut the barrel down to 12" and re-crown it. I think that would probably be the cheapest option.....Just finding such a beast is the problem.

thanks for the feedback, Jerry
