Blast Shields

Is anyone still making blast shields for calf protection? I've already contacted Joe Cullison and he is unable to make one for me.

I'm currently wearing long jeans when I shoot (dead-frog) without a blast shield, so something at least as thick to protect my legs if I'm wearing shorts. Possibly suede?

By the way, I'm not shooting a revolver....

My wife made some a couple years ago. I'll see if she still has the pattern. Can't do really thick suede with embroidery machine but I use it for non revolver.

Unless something changed suede would not be legal. Soft conforming blast shields were ruled out because you could use them as a shooting aid.

First, what he is looking for is a Leg Guard, not a blast shield.

This is the rule concerning Blast shields:

D) Blast shields used in the freestyle shooting position if used for protection only, provided it is not excessively padded, constructed or contoured so as to be used as a shooting aid.

Both my Blast shield and leg guard are made out of welding leather.

Thanks nutcase, been on a biz trip.

I got about ten yards of Kevlar in the 80's and made some. I sold off some to guy that wrapped it in suede. Shooting freestyle he could wad it up so the gun was more rigidly supported.

Leather welder sleeves is what I use too.

I have had a couple of them made for myself and fellow shooters. My local leather craftsman who primarily does saddles and tack suggested to use the leather called Split Pearl. It is the silver tanned leather hide and He mostly cuts it for the chaps or aprons worn by the Ferriers'- Horseshoeing tradesman. it can be semi-rigid to mildly flexable so that it will drape properly when worn as a blast shield or leg wrap. I gave him my pattern and he sewed the velcro where I needed and the strap for the blast shield. I have both types and had them for many years.
