Gun Digest Book of Metallic Silhouette Shooting

Post by kg4tyr »

How many of you have seen or remember this? Published in 1979, written by Elgin Gates.

It is still complete, but is in 2 pieces. The book is split at page 88 and 89 at the spine.

I still have my copy. It is a tad yellowed, but otherwise in great shape.

I still have that book. It is autographed by Mr Gates. I attended the match at which Susan Gunby recieved the award illustrated on pg 202. I also attended when she shot that score. Running a 10 on Rams at that time was such a rarity that the director allowed her to shoot until there was a miss. I believe this was in 1977 or 78, as by 1979 we were shooting at the DeKalb County range. The setting shown is at a place called Sowhatchett Plantation which was and maybe still is located a few miles from the town of Rutledge, Ga.
I was only able to attend a match or two during that time, and joined in March of 1979, recieving #5905, now 5905-L. It has been quite a ride.
I have served as assistant match director, Southern Silhouette club, 1980s. Also, the Griffin Gun Club for Silhouette during the 1990s, to about 2005. For a short period I authored the ''Cast Bullet'' section of The IHMSA News. Joined IHMSA March 1979.

I just came across my copy about a month ago. Elgin put my picture from a gun show into the book and surprised me with a copy when it came out. I was living in Idaho Falls, not too far from him and always thought it was such a nice thing for someone to do. I don't think I've ever known someone with so may irons in the fire. I really enjoyed the matches and shooting in Idaho, especially the Silhouette matches.

Interesting seeing the post
I've been away from shooting for along time
the thought if silhouette shooting has revamped my interest and I remembered having this book.
so I started looking for it for some reason I was thinking the cover was blue(until I saw your post) after digging around (for 2 weeks )
I had almost given up and then I found it last night (packed away with a BLUE exploded view of guns) interesting it was written the month and year my son was born April 79. It was in pretty good shape not sure when or were I bought it I figure around real early 80's

It was a great time to be shooting. I was young, had money for toys, and didn't mind temperatures below zero. Wow have times changed!!!

I've got one! It came out back in my days of IHMSA competition and was of great interest to me.
