david, i've tried to get a club to host the smallbore, field pistol, and 1/5 scale regional. no club wants to host them. the match is usually held on memorial day weekend. is your club interested in hosting them next year?? allen

(A) At this point we don't even have 1/5 scale, but do have targets available.
(B) only one bank (of 5) of each SB & FP, on rope reset (I personally have a complete set of 40 SB freestanding targets, but no room for them there).
(C) we are at a state run facility and it costs $5.50 to enter each day, plus shooting fees for the match.
(D) I actually just shoot there and have no connection to the club.
If my friends at my LGS would have concentrated on their outdoor range (in another county), we would have another place to shoot and the liberty to do whatever we wanted (I would be in charge of the silhouette and maybe more). Unfortunately, they dove head first into their indoor range and because of the idiots here in our county it has been delayed opening now for over 6 months. Their plan was to take revenue from the indoor range to help support the costs of the outdoor range. I'm no business man, but I knew they were going about this backwards.
They own the property for the outdoor range and also have equipment to move dirt, = minimal expenses. A covered firing line is cheaper than a complete indoor range building. An outdoor range will allow a lot of different types of shooters to benefit, ie, Hunters, action pistol, silhouette, target, etc. The indoor range is limited to basically 22 pistols and rifles and straight wall handgun cartridges, limiting your clientele. They now have a lot of $$ wrapped up into a building that the county won't let them open (almost a year since breaking ground). They better be open loooooong hours and offer every type of class that's out there to start making some money.
I honestly know their reasoning, the indoor range, gun shop and their house are all on the same piece of property making it real easy to keep an eye on everything. Oh well maybe they'll get to it next year. Even if they do, we wouldn't qualify for a State or Regional match, especially by Memorial Day

Re: 2013 SB Region II Championships?
Our club (Ascension Silhouette) in Gonzales LA. held the SB Region 2 match in 1999. We shot a total of about 88 entries. Our local participation back then was pretty good, but has since fallen to almost nothing. We have talked about hosting a Regional again on several occasions - but we feel that the total of shooters willing to travel all of the way to Louisiana to shoot a smallbore regional do not warrant going to all of the trouble and expense to have said match. The numbers simply do not add up ! ---- Philip Braud

I had been out of silhouette shooting for a long time. Now after shooting again for a year. We only average 3-4 shooters a month.braud357 wrote:Our club (Ascension Silhouette) in Gonzales LA. held the SB Region 2 match in 1999. We shot a total of about 88 entries. Call me stupid, but how much trouble and expense is involved in hosting a SB Regional? If participation is this low, it doesn't seem like it would be any harder than running a monthly match, during the good years of IHMSA

Re: 2013 SB Region II Championships?
David - the main expense is trophies. In my opinion, the awards for such a match should be nice, because it IS a regional match. Sure, we could do it - but I guarantee that we would only have a few more shooters attend than would attend our regular and state matches. In 1999 I bought some very nice plaques, for the champions and 1st place awards. The entry fees barely covered the cost of the trophies, not to mention t-shirts, the Saturday night get-together, and paid target setters. If I remember correctly, we had to come "out of pocket" to the tune of around $250. Also, we did not have to pay for our insurance back then, which we have to pay for now. This amounts to about $550 a year. That takes all of our yearly receipts to pay for. Back in 1999, we had surplus funds - now, we do not ! Question, if we would have a SB regional, would you come ?? From my experience, shooters will travel to attend a big bore regional - a SB and FP regional not as likely ------ and, you have to make it attractive to get shooters to attend.

Re: 2013 SB Region II Championships?
Mike, sorry that I did not comment on your original post. Although I would love to visit Virginia - the distance and expense would be far too great for me to attend. Nor will I be able to attend the 2013 BB regionals in NC - same reason.
