I had a possibly dumb/fun idea for a side match.
Field Pistol shot with slugs. Everyone has a 12g with a slug barrel why not try it out on field pistol. 20 targets, no sight adjustments.
Let me know what you think

Wonder what a 12 gauge slug would do to a 25 yard FP chicken? How far would it fly?
Interesting science experiment!

Start with your own club & talk with your match director.

I'm pretty sure you will end up with unacceptable target damage. The weight of the slug etc would be like a heavier 45-70 plus at that close of a distance. It would tear the welds right off the feet and probably bend the heck out of them.

Everybody has a 12 gauge slug barrel? I'd say that is an over-generalization, unless you live in Iowa or someplace like that.

Slugs are pretty heavy but they are large and slow. It seems that if a hot 44 FPJ is ok then slugs Should be fine but I really don't know. I ges the simplest way is to try it.
I think the match would be a light hearted game that would be a fun change of pace (and remind everyone why they love handguns

)

I am coming from ohio where if you hunt whitetail the only legal guns are shotguns (with a slug) muzzleloaders, and straight walled pistols with a 5.5+ barrel.
you can ges which is the most popular.

You're right, looking at federals published data for 2 3/4" slugs and their .45-70 loads and they are fairly close in ft-lbs.
Im quite a newbie though and I have to ask: how much difference is there in the durability of FP targets and BB targets?
im getting the itch for a torture test....

Sounds like fun for about 5 shots

Heck when I used to hunt, I never carried a 12 GA, I opted for a 20.
