Standard Velocity is probably your best bet. Don’t want it tumbling somewhere in the last 25 yards or meters.
RWS Target, Wolf Target, Winchester T-22 to name just a few that I've seen used over the years in Minnesota. Best to settle on one that matches your price range, and buy a case! The case purchase will give you the most important thing, consistency year after year. Seen too many people chasing good sight setting while using many different types of ammo, or lot to lot in different years!

I shot my only 80x80 at the Internaionals using SK Match. They stop making the Match, now only make Rifle Match. I switched to Lapua CenterX this year. Haven't shot a 40 this year, but several 38's.

As with most rimfires you'll have to let it tell you what it wants. Of course trying what someone else has found to be successful helps narrow the search. rp

Since we're all pretty generous with our opionions and sometimes ammo, go to a match, and ask if some people there would give you a 50 round box of their favorite brand of ammo to do your testing. Go to the range with your samples, and see what works best (In my opionion I'd try shooting at paper chickens @ 75 yards). Once you determine what brands seem to perform best, then narrow down your choices (Price, availability) One thing you won't know is performance in varying weather conditions. Temperature will make a difference.
Cold weather vs. hot weather will sometimes an issue, and some ammo's won't shoot well in both conditions. Being from the land Ice and Snow, I've dealt with this occurance before. 40 degrees to 70 will provide one set of sight setting, and another above 70 degrees.
Hence the reason for good notes, and if using just one case of ammo, you'll get years of reliable sight settings. I can tell you I bought three cases (15,000 rds) of PMC Target, Korean made fifteen-twenty years ago, as it was extremely accurate, and really cheap at $99-$109 a case. And I'm still shooting it all these years later! And I use it in Production, Revolver, U.S. and Standing. Both my 252, and BF love the stuff. But that's the thing, extremely expensive ammo is not always going to work better than the lesser brands. Testing will tell you what works well, and you can go from there.
Look around and see what everyone else is using, and ask why? There are those who take others word at quality, and those who do the testing themselves.

Good idea on asking people to give you a box of their favorite ammo. I've done that whenever I go to a new place, and people are very genrous with it. Some of them give you really good stuff. Then I turn around and sell that, then buy some of that cheap Remington stuff and that allows me to basically get to shoot free ammo. It is a pretty good deal really, and that cheap Remington ammo isn't all that bad at all particularly for the price. I mean, if a Freedom Arms is as good as you hear, you shouldn't need to spend a ton of money on ammo after already dropping a couple of grand on the gun itself.
