anyone shooting heavy bullets in the .270 Ren that will share some data for Cast or jacket bullets?

I just snagged the 270 Ren in the classifieds and plan to use cast in it. I was looking for some moulds but there aren't many just for the 270. I'm going to take some RCBS 145 7mm bullets and size them down to .278 and try them. Might not work since the noses will probably be too big. I would like to find a mould that would drop 120 to 130 grain bullets but haven't found one yet. If I stumble onto a good cast load I will let you know.

You won't have any luck sizing the 7MM bullet down to .278" .........about .003" or .004" is the most you reduce a bullet and maintain any of the original profile. I have that mold and you are correct. The nose on mine is .2785". To get that bullet sized to fit your chamber, you will end up with a smooth lead cylinder. Just go ahead and order a .278" mold. You'll end up doing that anyway. You may want to try Mountain mold. I believe he will cut a custom .278" mold for you........to your spec.

My buddy and I both have 270REN barrels. Never had much luck with cast but cant say I tried a whole lot. Have a mould that drops a 110gr bullet and also tried I believe a 130gr. Tried the 130gr for BB standing. The problem was that to get enough velocity to take rams you would have case seperations. The little hornet case just wouldn't stand up to the loads. Not saying it won't work but we just resolved to using it in FP.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think 7mm moulds would work but wanted to give it a try. I use a .277 die on the noses of my RCBS 145 7mm bullets just so they will slide into the bores of my 7mm guns so figured that would be too much resizing. Glad to hear at least other people have tried my crazy ideas!! I took some RCBS 240KT bullets used in my 44mag SB and sized them to .410 to try in my 41mags. Didn't turn out lopsided and still had a decent size grease groove. Didn't shoot too bad either. All the old cast experts say don't size more than .002 or .003 but not always true. I have some MM moulds and also LBT so may have to go that route. I was hoping to find a .278 mould around 100 to 110 grains for FP. I already thought the Hornet case would be too small to push heavy bullets for big bore. The search continues!!!!!

Sounds to me like the Ren would make a great Half scale Standing gun

I have a RCBS 150 .277 grain mold. I also have a 130 grain .277 mold on back order with Redding.

I believe the 110gr mold I have is a NEI mold. Here is a link to their catalog. It looks like they offer a 100gr. Not sure if that is the one I have but just drops closer to 110gr. Several mold makers base weights on Linotype and they will case heavier if you are using WW.
