Lockhart, you are correct, we don't want to give anyone the impression they need high dollar guns.
When a new or potential shooter comes to a match and is willing to listen to me... I explain to them about bring what they have, learning about loads, ammo, and working on skill. I then explain to them at some point their skill will exceed their equipment and if by that time, they decide they like the sport and want to continue, then it becomes time to upgrade equipment.
I make sure that each of these points are clear and then I describe my own journey, what equipment I started with and how long it took me to assemble my silhouette guns.
I do not allow them the opportunity to get scared off by high priced guns. I tell them this game is all about skill and the best place to start is with what you have. Set the goal of becoming a better shot with what you have.
It does not always work but that is how I handle that situation. I have, however, located a dozen contenders and countless barrels for shooters over the years, so it works some of the time.
