Around 1979 or so, I saw a properly set pig hit low, rear with a .44 Mag pushing a 240 grain bullet. At that range, the pigs were set on individual posts, one for each foot, the top of each stand being exactly the same size as the foot.

The pig picked up, jumped 180 degrees, and sat right back down on the two separate stands.

I maintained it was a scoreable hit. The rules called for targets to be knocked "from" the stands to score a hit. Well, the right foot was no longer on the right foot stand. The left foot was no longer on the left foot stand. Thus, a good shot. (I lost that argument, btw.)

I once saw a match in the rain on a range with clay soil where the target setters figured out if they'd just make sure there was a good layer of makeshift mortar between the feet and the rails, they wouldn't have to do as much work. They started setting everything without cleaning target feet so that there was a big dollop of sticky clay gluing every target to the stands. Everything failed on everything for a quite a few relays during that match.

I once saw a 7-08 shooting max loads with 175 SMKs fail on a properly set ram.

Anything can fail. Anyone can have a bee fly into the path of their bullet. Anyone can have a touch of bad luck. That's what keeps life interesting.
