We are all aware of the discussions on keeping local ranges hosting IHMSA matches and trying to grow our membership numbers. Some have said that the Internationals are what hold us together as an association but I would dare say that if the local clubs don't host matches, there would not be an Internationals match. I have worked hard to keep IHMSA going here in Louisiana and thought I would share a couple of things I do here to try to get participation up and keep operating costs down. We do have an admittedly small core group of shooters who we can usually rely on to show up on most scheduled match dates. There are quite a few more who for one reason or another come only occasionally. I often heard the excuse....."I forgot about the match till it was too late" So to address this issue, I created a data base of contact info for everybody that shoots at our matches. Then about a week preceding the match, I send out email reminders. That way the shooters don't "forget" and can perhaps plan to attend. To address costs, we stopped giving awards for our monthly matches. We continue to give awards for our annual state Championship match. To keep those awards cost low, I design and print full color glossy photo certificates with the name and image of the shooter, as well as all other pertinent information. Here is an example:
I can produce and mail this for very little cost and it is a pleasant change from the usual plaque or trophy. It looks good framed and can be proudly displayed just about anywhere. I understand that not everyone has the software or skills to design these but it has helped us a lot in reducing our costs to operate. I change the design every year to achieve a fresh look for each match.
