Current pistols in the vault to try 500 "Ultra"

Post by BLACKBEAR »

Currently no big "flop" guns.

243AI on a Nesika midgrip, 15" 8 twist barrel, 2.5x8 Leupold

6.5 Grendel, Bat action, Dell trigger, 2.5x8 Leupold

6.5 TCU XP100, Bomars, Dell trigger, ugly stock

25BR XP100, Bomars, Dell trigger, muzzel brake

Let the loading and testing begin in Utah's west desert.

Looks like a good list of iron to play with.

My brother and were wondering if a 6.5 tcu would be 'enough'. We would really like to give ours a try in unlimited standing. If we are fortunate enough to hit a ram we want to see it fall.

most of those will work with heavy bullets.

The 6.5TCU will be marginal but will work as long as you use 140+ Grain bullets and have a 1:8 twist barrel. any slower twist cannot stabilize the big 6.5mm bullets.

the 243ai even though has plenty of power, may ring Ram because of the bullet weights. I have use a 6BR on them, but I did ring a couple of rams.

Shooting BB UAS (scoped) I've never rang a target with the below load in my 14" Contender and it has accounted for a few 40's.

I aim dead center on the chickens and pigs.......breast or rear end on the turkeys (not center).......chest or rump on the rams (not center).

Remington fire formed .223 brass.....Remington 7 1/2 BR primers.....Remington 120 gr PSPCL bullet.....20.9 grs of IMR4198.

ok guys, I did some checks...

Hosspower: your 6.5Tcu load(based on rough estimates) would have a Momemtum factor of .71. I am estimating a muzzle velocity of 1700 Fps

Craig: Your 6ppc load showed up at a momentum factor of .90. :D even at a muzzle velocity of 2200 fps, it met the .78 factor ;)

I checked my 7BR load for my wichita which is a Hornady 154 SST at 2019 fps. It has a momentum factor of .91

Hornady has a balistics calculator online that works very well (along it is free). you can find it here:

http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-resou ... calculator

The Sierra Xfinity program is supposed to be the best on the market, but you have to buy it.
