Looking to build a half scale gun with the SSK-50 frame I won at the nationals. (thank you IHMSA). Will be shooting flop. Like some suggestions on caliber please. Wandering if 22 hornet would work. Thanks

Since on average. half scale targets run thicker than the full size targets (usually 1/2-5/8 inch for ram), The .223 would be the minimum cartridge I would use. the .22 hornet is way too under powered for 1/2 scale.

Since I hate the flop position and I have never seen anybody shoot Flop with a contender, I will leave this for other people to answer.

I would run a .221 Fireball with a twist fast enough to stabilize 75 -80 grain bullets.

When i was shooting half scale alot, i was using a .223 with a 69 grain bullet. I cant remember the speed but pretty slow compared to a normal .223. I never lost a ram.

I agree with Greg, that a .221 fireball or maybe a .222 with a 75-80 grain bullet might be optimal. 1/6 or 1/7 twist would be a good choice so you can experiment with heavier bullets. And invest in a really good muzzle brake. I shot two different guns with my .223 load and they both had muzzle brakes. I still had to watch my eye relief very closely.

Put as much research into the brake as you do the caliber.

You are one lucky dog! Those SSK-50 frames are sweet!

I use a 25-20. Recoil is not a problem. I have not lost a ram with 75 grain bullets. I agree with Jim, you won't have to run it at all the speed you can get.

I have shot my TC/MGM barreled 14" 22 Hornet once in Half-Scale. I shot a 39x40 (missed the 1st ram !) I was using Hornady 55 gr. SP bullets with a light load of Accurate 9 powder. Lucky, perhaps - but our targets are in good condition and we have good, level stands. I would also suggest a fast-twist 221 Fireball like the others have - especially if you intend to shoot "flop"

Following this thread cuz I have a 13" 221 Fireball but have never shot it.

Jim is right about brakes. My 222 Rampro 7t? or 8t? has a great muzzle brake. Larry Harris used it on many great scores before he passed. You may keep the 222 in mind (halfway between 221 and 223) if you want double duty with it on BB or PHLC. And a 6x from Creedmoor is adequate. My .02

And you're welcome on the SSK frame!

Thanks for the replies. Heavily leaning towards the 221 Fireball.

I would run a 6X.221 from SSK. They shoot really well, and you can use a projectile with 100 grains.

221 Fireball

I acquired a original XP-100 221 Fireball -- 4 digit SN (unfired) Used the Sierra 55gr BK with IMR4227 and put on a Bushnell 2x6 EER scope and I have had no issues taking any of the 1/2 scale critters, I just have to do my part of course. Fun - light recoil - easy to play the game with and love it
