Hello, the fire,

I reckon it's been discussed before. I'm looking a building a range on my place for practice and maybe someday matches.

Is it permissible to "stack" (or maybe alternate depth/height is a better word) small bore targets?
I'm wanting to make the ram line a bit shorter than what distance 10 in a straight row takes up. That way we can have more than 10 targets on a narrow bank.

I'm pondering a set up like this. First 5 rams at 101 yds. Second 5 rams at 100 yds.
The first five would appear to be above the second five.
And the second 5 would be lower and just a tad closer.

It would look like this from the firing line.

6 7 8 9 10

I didn't see a problem with that as long as the rams didn't topple each other when falling over from a shot.

Please let me know if it's been done successfully. Or IHMSA-legal.

I wanted to make the ram line to look more like this:

I don't see a problem with it. It is hard to tell but in the picture on the banner above but most of the half scale and fifth scale targets are at slightly different distances from each other. In my opinion just remember there is a definite 1 through 10 and must be shot in order.

The only issue I see is that the shooter must be able to distinguish which targets are one through five and six through ten. You might try the layout to make sure they are distinguishable. I know some ranges actually build racks and stack them one through five on the bottom and six through ten on the top. That way, a target falling off the top rack does not accidentally knock down one on the bottom rack. That may be a better setup for you depending on the topography of your land.

Well, I did a little playing and stacking here. I was pondering doing this only with small bore rams. Not chickens, pigs or turkeys.
My plan was to have one yard of linear range distance between the rows. Like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 set at 101 yds. And 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 set at 100 yds.
The 1-5 row would be a full 36" higher too.
And 1 was further left than 6. So you could (should) not get mixed up as to which is the first row of targets to shoot.
I reckon that a .22 bullet will not move a ram far enough to disturb the front or rear row.

I will test the theory when I can. I have a nice draw with a 60 ft rise behind it for a safety area. Lots of trees on each side and beyond.

Gregg this format is in place at the Conover, NC range. It works well. You do have to get a mental picture of where the targets are so you dont lose them; especially with scoped guns and half scale targets. rp
