I’ll probably get a little long winded with this match report because it represented some “firsts”. For the first time since this new facility started hosting IHMSA Smallbore matches, my brother Philip was able to join us. It is a 230 mile drive for him so he arrived Friday evening ahead of our Saturday start. As first gun on the line he wasted no time and delivered yet another 40X40 in UAS with his Ruger Charger. He followed that with a very solid 39X40 in UASFS, missing only the last ram. I ran my Anschutz through the course in UASFS and finished with a 39X40 as well. I am trying to get IHMSA introduced to as many people as possible in this area of the state so I invite anybody with any interest at all, even if only with a rifle at first. So today, first time ever in an IHMSA match, Lanny Blake tried his hand with a scoped 10” Browning Buckmark Silhouette model in the Practical Hunter category. His score of 37X40 was very impressive. His wife Debbie then fired an entry with a Savage long gun and managed 35X40. Now for the big news among all of the “firsts”. Many of you in Region Two know my wife Carolyn. She has been at my side at virtually every match I have ever attended and handles target setting duties at both of our Louisiana ranges, plus she spots for me when I shoot. She is an IHMSA member but has never fired an entry as a member…..ever. Until this match that is. I finally succeeded in talking her into giving it a try. I have assembled a “Club Gun” that I make available to any new shooter who wants to try our game. It’s a 10” Contender with a BSA scope. Using this rig, Carolyn agreed to a Practical Hunter entry. Though Carolyn is no stranger to a silhouette match she has never before fired this gun. She took no sighter shots and stepped right up to the line with me coaching. She cleaned all 10 chickens. She missed only one pig. She cleaned all the turkeys. The rams did prove tough for her but she finished with a 33X40. Welcome to AAA class darling. I don’t know who was more proud, her or myself. We had three IHMSA members shoot Practical Hunter this weekend and Carolyn beat us all, including me. I tried with a newly acquired High Standard Trophy (this gives me two of these models) using the factory iron sights but I could not touch Carolyn’s 33X40. On Sunday, Will and Brenda Kirste joined us and Brenda’s 38X40 in UAS topped that husband and wife team, besting Will by 5 targets. I’m seeing a trend here with the ladies. We have one final match scheduled for the 2015 season but I may decide to extend that to include a July match. I will announce that if it comes to be. See Y’all in June.
