A guy watning to get into the sport wants to know if factory ported revolvers are within the rules for production revolver.
Afyer perusing the allowed firearms in the rules I see that any revolver the is as is from the factory is allowed as long as it makes weight and is within the sight radii and overall length. Thereis no place stating specifically ported revolvers are not alloed. Am I correct???

Check page 30 of the 2011 rule book under "Not Allowed". Muzzle brakes, comps, etc. are listed there.

Welcome to the board litegun. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. His revolver is allowed in the trial Practical Hunters Category. As long as he can shoot it in a safe position. It is not allowed in any of the production or unlimited categories for safty reasons as Steve stated.

Jeff, You're welcome. I assumed the barrel was less than 12 inches long. I know there are a few revolvers with extra long barrels. I didn't take the time to look up the rule and am paraphrasing from memory. "Any barrel 12 inches in length including muzzle break or porting is allowed in Unlimited." No muzzle breaks or porting is allowed on production guns. If I'm incorrect please correct me someone.

Jeff, I'm sorry we are hijacking your thread. That was one of my contentions on the trial category. Jeff's friends gun is not allowed for safty reasons in the original classes but is allowed in the trial class. It is as if there never was a safty issue with "short" barrels and porting to begin with.

OK Greg, your wish is granted. I just emailed the following proposed rule amendment to Warren, our Secretary/Treasurer. I also submitted a letter to the IHMSA News editor making the membership aware of this proposal. Now, all those in favor start lobbying your regional director to support this change!

Proposed Rule Change

The current rule regarding equipment not allowed reads as follows:

2. Not Allowed: The following equipment, accessories, actions are not allowed:
A) Artificial rests or supports, slings, padded or unnecessarily heavy clothing, or any kind of wrist or arm supports or bracelets.
B) Applied friction materials or rubberizing on any part of the handgun.
C) Muzzle brakes, compensators or ported barrels on handguns with barrel lengths less than 12 inches in overall length, including the muzzle brake, compensator or porting.

I propose the following rule change. Proposed change in bold type.

Add new Section II.A. 8. to read as follows:

8) Firearms with muzzle brakes, compensators or ported barrels with barrel lengths less than 12 inches in overall length, including the muzzle brake, compensator or porting must be fired from a safe shooting position ensuring the brake, compensator or ported portion of the barrel is safely away from all parts of the shooter’s body.

Delete paragraph C from Section X.A.2. to read as follows.

2. Not Allowed: The following equipment, accessories, actions are not allowed:
A) Artificial rests or supports, slings, padded or unnecessarily heavy clothing, or any kind of wrist or arm supports or bracelets.
B) Applied friction materials or rubberizing on any part of the handgun.

Steve, I can live with the "porting" rule one way or the other. I have two unlimited guns with muzzle breaks. If the rules did not allow them it would be fine with me. They simply would not have them on there. I had the one put on my XP and love it but it is not neccessary. The T C barrel is a Hunter model and it came on there. I simply thought it was funny all those years production guns couldn't have "porting". Now we have this trial category and short barrels and "porting" is alright. I know in the past there were many in favor of factory porting on revolvers. You should get some support.
