.22 Hornet

Post by 7br »

Not really silhouette, except it is a .22 hornet in a TC. I have a super 16 barrel in .22 hornet that I picked up to use when .22 lr ammo was scarce. I have the RCBS 22-55 and the Lyman 225415. I have 2400, 296, lil gun, 231 and maybe some 4227 laying around. Any suggestions for a .22lr to .22 mag type load?

I am currently using the RCBS in my 10" contender with 4.3 gr of 231.

I'd think for .22 lr/mag velocities, you'd stay with 231 or something really close to it like Titegroup, or maybe as slow as a really light charge of Unique or something similar.

Actually, having a 16" Hornet sounds like a really cool idea! :-)

I recently tested "Hornet" loads (1700-1900 fps scoured the internet) in my 221.
Bullet: 55g Hornady JSP
700X: 5.7-6.0 g
Unique: 5.6-6.0 g

Most posted ~1" groups at 100 yards. Recoil was non existent. Hits were ~1.5" lower than full loads.

Don't know how low you can go and still be safe. 700X should not be too volume sensitive as I have gone to 2.0 g @ 148 g WC in 38 Special without problems (similar case volume).

4.3 grains of Unique or in the same ballpark of Universal will get you what you seek.

I use 2400 for my 22 Hornet loads, I'm loading 7.0 grs of 2400 behind a 40 gr moly coated Nosler Varmagedden bullet. That's approx 2 grs below the suggested start charge in the Sierra reloading manual. Pretty mild and right at 1 m.o.a. at 100 yards. In my case, that's the lightest charge that gives good accuracy. I use small pistol primers.
