what is good accurate load for the .44 mag. with 240 gr. cast bullets?

I use 12gr of Unique. It's not a "magnum" power level load but does perform well on our auto reset targets & it is very accurate in my DW.

I am using 18 grains of 2400 behind a gas checked 240 grain projectile in my quest for long range accuracy. At 25m it cuts a ragged hole. Now need to do the same on a ram at 200

Edit, this is out of a Ruger super redhawk with 9.5 inch barrel.

I use 23.0 grains of W296 but it is one of the more healthy loads. My CB is the RCBS 240 silhouette mould so don't know if that load would work with a different style 240 bullet. I did use that same load with the RCBS 225 grain gas check bullet and that was also a very accurate load for that bullet too. Shot both out of my Ruger 10 1/2" SB silhouette revolver.

I like SR-4759 behind a 262 gr cast bullet. But for the second time it has been discontinued...

As for .44 Mag and lead bullets, for Field Pistol I've had good results with a mere 6.5gr 231 under a 240gr projectile.

I don't get it either...It's a slightly oversize RCBS 250K that drops at 262 grs with my alloy, 18+ grs SR-4759. 1200 fps or so...

I have an old Lachmiller that runs about that weight and is big enough to fit the oversized throats of my various older revolvers. But it's a gas check design, which is a bit off-putting. I usually use one of the Lyman Keith type renditions. The new four cavity moulds are very nice, except they drop bullets at about 0.429-0.430" which is just too small for the revolvers with 0.432"-0.434" throats.

Haven't tried the SR4759. Would be bad to find it's ideal, but no longer made! IMR4227 has been a big dud. 2400 has been good for hunting loads, but is a bit much for Field Pistol.

Ahhh....

Long story short, I came up with it about 20 years ago as my CB "handle" when I drove 18 wheels for a living. Is a play on words involving my admiration of the music of Buck Owens and a large mortgage I took on at the time... ;)

Been using it ever since...
