30 Herrett and NOE 150 SP CB

Post by 260 Striker »

Tried two loads today in my 10" 30 Herrett and the NOE 150 spire point cast bullet. Tried 17.5 and 18.0 grains of SR4759 using Federal 210 primers and reformed R-P 32 Special brass. Temperature was 88 degrees here in OH this afternoon so was watching for sticky cases and flat primers. Both loads did not show any pressure signs and fired cases easily dropped out of the gun. The 18.0 grain load shot a very tight group on my chicken target. I am very impressed with the NOE 150 SP bullet so far. I cast them out of linotype. So far that bullet has been very accurate in my 30BR XP and now my 10" 30 Herrett. Used 18.0 grains in both the 30BR and Herrett. Don't have a chronograph so don't know what velocity I am getting but suspect about 1600 fps or there about. Recoil wasn't too bad and wouldn't tire you out in a 40 round match. Haven't shot the Herrett for several years so am looking forward to our match at the end of the month. I will do my normal thing and shoot an entry without any settings beyond the chickens. If anyone is looking for a good 30 caliber cast bullet I would highly recommend the NOE 150 SP.

I believe that load will get it done . I shot my 30 Herrett for the first time in UAS Sat. with Lee 150 FN's over 16 gr. 4759 and it took down all the rams but 1 and I think it was a low hit ( real low ). missed 1 pig and the turkeys had some fun with me so I ended up with 33 , but no complaints it was the first Big Bore I was able to shoot this year so I was plenty rusty. I can say that won't be the last match for the Herrett ,it likes silly wets. I would like to hear how the match goes with those 150 NOE , great looking bullet

I just tried two loads with SR 4759 (17.5 and 18.0) as a test since. I came up with these amounts by comparing the powder capacity between a 30 Herrett and 30BR. Probably not the most scientific way to arrive at a load but thought I would try it. Two cases are very close in volume with BR just a little bigger. Anyway, I too was going to drop back to 16.0 grains of SR4759 but the 18.0 load shot so well and didn't show any pressure and the temp was 88 degrees at the time of the test so I don't think there will be a problem. I shot the 18.0 load last so the gun was even warm at the time of the test. I still might give the 16.0 load a try since I am know for my wimp loads. That NOE 150 spire point has been very accurate so far.

I think you are right on with the 18 gr. load because I believe you can push the NOE a little harder than the Lee design . And besides every barrel is its own animal what works in one might look like buck shot in another. Good luck

Marshall - Shot Production with my 30 Herrett but didn't do as well as I hoped. Load worked great but I was way off on my sight settings that I had used for jacketed loads. Thought the old setting would be close but didn't work out that way. Also hadn't shot a TC for several years. It felt great to shoot a TC again. The load was very accurate since all my misses were going into the same spot and it was just a matter of getting the sights adjusted. I'm thinking about backing it down to about 16.0 grains and trying again. The 18.0 grain load really got the bullet to the target quick. Don't have a chronograph so have no idea how fast the bullets were going. Primers looked great and brass just fell out of the gun so 18.0 was not too much. I have a 14" 30 Herrett and think I will try the 16.0 grain load in it. Will be doing the same "shoot without sight settings" so probably won't hit as many as the gun/load is capable of. I'm still having too much fun shooting silhouettes after 34 years to worry about scores!!! That NOE 150 bullet is great.

I believe that you will get that Herrett dialed in . And that is tough going at it with minimal sight settings If you go with the 14" will that be a U or UAS . Either way I bet it will be shooter for sure.
