Varget in 7mm tcu

Post by Richard Pickering »

Has anyone shot this combination ? What results did you have ? I believe Varget to be a little slower than H4895. I want to use it with the ever popular RCBS 145 bullet. TC Contender 10''. Thank you. Richard

Richard I think its too slow I believe Varget 's in 4064 burn rate range . IMR 4198 did good in mine with cast, I found H322 almost too slow with cast , left a lot of unburnt powder with 130 lee & 160 lyman

I think my brother shot Varget in his 7 TCU, and really liked it. Shot 140 gr bullets. Ask him. Whatever he shot, it worked.

A friend of mine uses Varget with cast in a 7TCU and he found it to be accurate. Velocites were low, however, and he had trouble with rams.

The short review is that Varget may be a bit slow, it seems serviceable but it doesn't do as well as H322 in my abbreviated test. 10/29/2013 100m Bench, fore-end rested but not the grip. RCBS 145 sil. Burris 7x. TC 7-tcu 10''. While 7x is better than 4x I'm sure it doesn't allow for removing all aiming errors. At 100m 19gr showed the most promise with 8 of 10 in 1 3/4'' and 9 in 3''. 20gr H322 wasn't better with 8 in 2 3/4'' and 9 in 3 3/4''. 22gr Varget had 7 in 2 1/2'', 8 in 2 3/4'', 9 in 3 1/2''. 23gr Varget showed 6 in 2 1/2'' and 8 in 3 1/2''. I did not record velocities this time. I'll retry 19gr H322 and see if it repeats. If I think 24gr Varget is safe I'll try that. rp

Presently I am using 14gr, 14.5, or 15gr 2400 with the RCBS 145 sil bullet. I have only shot this on paper and haven't chrono yet. It seems promising. Now that we have reasonable daytime temps I hope to get a range day soon. There is always something more to learn. About the time you think you know something you come away with more questions than you had answered. rp
