Hi Friends. I want to hear any recommendations for a powder that, 1) Wont cause as much noise and, 2) allows MV of about 2100 fps. For use as a Half scale entry. I have 4227, 4198, 4895, 4759, 5744, and some Varget. In searching reduced loads Blue Dot is mentioned----having due respect for its charge volume. I have B D and fired two rounds at 11gr and a 55gr SP. Primers looked normal but until I know more I dont want to increase it. So-----if you have experience with a 10'' 223 barrel----please share. Thank you. rp

I'm not shooting a 10" barrel, but am using a 14" for shooting 1/2 scale. My load for chickens and pigs is 11.5 grs of IMR4759 under a 60 gr. Hornady SP bullet. For turkeys and rams, I use 23.1 grs. of H322 under the same 60 gr. Hornady bullet. The 11.5 grs. of IMR4759 pushes the 60 gr bullet at a 5 shot average of 1972 fps. The H322 runs at 2728 fps. I have used H335 instead of H322 and it works just as well. The 4759 load is really mild on recoil. I got the 4759 load out of an old speer manual for a low recoiling load for a 222 magnum. Hope this gives you a starting point

Thank you. That is most helpful. I found a 4759 listing in a Speer manual as well. I tried 10gr and it shot nicely at 25yd. Soon I'll move it to 50yd. I also had a good result with 12gr 4227 at 25yd and will increase to 13gr and give it a try at 50yd. (Presently I'm using a 14x scope). rp

While I think of it, can anybody remember the twist rate on TC barrels. I have a 14" that I am just getting ready to load test and most of the bullets I have are for my .223 rifle (9 twist) shooting 70gr+ bullets and if I remember right the twist was a 12 twist on contenders.

According to the Sierra manual, TC is 1:12 twist.

SR-4759 is a wonderful powder, but good lucking finding any. It's one of the best powders I can find for the Smith .500, but it has been discontinued, AGAIN. i bought up about 10 lbs of it and that should last me the rest of my life for my .500 loads.

Factory T C barrels are 1-12 twist. Some will stabilize up to 60 grain bullets and some won't. Try 2400 powder.

After some range shooting I settled on 12.0 4759 and 55gr bullets. rp

Will trail Boss produce enough velocity to knock down half scale rams ? SR4759 will. rp
