Does anyone have q copy of the IHMSA Loading Manual

Post by hockeyref »

Does anyone have a copy of the IHMSA Loading Manual and would be so kind as to provide the information for 7TCU and 300 Savage? I've called several powder companies and they won't\cannot even discuss it since it's not listed in their current manual. Had one person tell me that he cannot even discuss anything that is not already in their data. He would not provide any pressure data for any book loads and said that he was forbidden to even discuss his own personal loads even though they are all book loads 8-} . We both remember the days when we could call and actually discuss internal ballistics rather that rehash the sanitized and "lawyerized" printed data. :( :((

All of my notes, old data pamphlets, and loading manuals have been lost over time and multiple moves. While I do have an idea on what I used to to run for 7TCU,I do not have any of that powder and given the current spotty powder availability it would be nice to have an expanded data set to confirm that I could use a powder that I do have. As for my 300 Savage Bullberry barrel, I am having a devil of a time finding any info - anywhere. I know that I want to keep the pressure below 35k due to the original Contender frame but it seem like the interweb has been scrubbed of any TC data, let alone the data that included pressures for max and min loads. QuickLoad might be an option, but I don't own a copy and cannot justify the cost since I don't wildcat the way I used to. I have played with Gordons Reloading tool, but does not have an extensive powder library and is still in BETA.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I have in front of me the 1982 dated, 175 page manual that has on the cover "Reloading for Handgun Accuracy", the IHMSA logo and "The Official Reloading Handbook of the IHMSA, Inc."......is that the book your are referring to ?

For 300 savage it lists three bullets....150 gr. with three powders, 165 gr. with two powders and 168 gr. with one powder.

For 7mmTCU it also lists three bullets....140 gr. with four powders, 154 gr. with four powders and 160 gr. with four powders.

Which weight bullets for each cartridge do you need data for ?

Hi Ike,
Yes, it what I am referring to. Just about the only place that I know that for certain has the load data I'm looking for. Actually would like to have data for all of the above bullet weights. I have used all of the bullet weights that you've listed for each caliber as well as 130gr for the 300 savage. If it's easier, you can send me a picture of the pages rather than typing all the info.

Much appreciation for your help!

Not to hijack the thread, but...

Who owns the copyright for the book? I expect IHMSA.

Would it be possible to review and add new loads, then "self publish" or make into PDF for a price? Thee are many new members since 1982 who may like a copy.

Knowing how IHMSA & the Gates family were intertwined in the 1980's, the copyright is probably owned by Elgin Gates' estate.

7mmTCU tested barrel length 10".....oddly the book only lists one muzzle velocity per powder type.

140 gr. bullet.

H4895 min. 23.8....max. 24.6....MZ 1735
H4227 min. 17.0....max 17.5....MZ 1697
H4198 min. 19.5....max 22.5....MZ 1854
IMR3031 min. 23.8....max 24.6....MZ 1693

154 gr. bullet.

H4895 min. 24.0....max 25.0....MZ 1721
WW748 min. 26.0....max 27.0....MZ 1752
H4198 min. 21.0....max 22.0....MZ 1797
H4227 min. 17.5....max18.5....MZ 1741

160 gr. bullet.

H4227 min. 18.6....max 19.4....MZ 1807
WW748 min. 25.0....max 26.0....MZ 1752
H4198 min. 20.5....max 25.0....MZ 1729
H4895 min. 24.0....max 25.0....MZ 1793

300 Savage has no barrel length or MZ listed.

150 gr. bullet.

4895 (no H or IMR shown) min. 30.0....max 39.0
748 min. 38.0....max 44.0
4198 min 30.0....max 35.0

165 gr. bullet.

4759 min. 22.5....max 27.0
4895 min. 33.0....max 39.0

168 gr. bullet.

748 min. 36.0....max 43.0

* * * *I personally would not use the data above for either 7mmTCU or 300 Savage but instead use data from more current reloading manuals.* * * *

Ike, Thanks for the data!
The 300 Savage info looks to be standard book data for a rifle. Those max loads will be at or over max for a Contender frame.... the search continues. :((

I found a box with ten loaded 7 TCU rounds left over from the 1990's. The label says 26.5 gr of WW748 with 150gr flat base soft point spitzer (probably a bulk Remington or Winchester bullet)

Also, I did come across some useful info myself yesterday. I found an Accurate Powder 2003 guide dated 1/7/2003 - 300 Savage is not in the guide at all???.
Here is what they have for 7 TCU (copied directly from the guide). It might help some others looking for a place to start.:
