LeveRevolution and the .357 Herrett

Post by Pinsnscrews »

Anyone tried it yet?
The powder seems to work very well in both the 30-30 AND the 35 Remington. I am just trying to figure out a safe way to come up with a load to try.

Since nobody else has chimed in, looking at the burn rate charts, LE might be a little on the slow side for the 357H. I use H4198 and it really pops with 180's. In Hodgdons data they show IMR4198 as clearly the fastest powder with 200's so that leads me to think LE might not be all that well suited. An email to Hodgdon though might steer you in the right direction. During the '08 shortage I got some really good data from Accurate powders on cartridges they didn't have any published data for.

Thanks for the reply. Hodgdon admits that Lever is a specialized powder that doesn't really have an accurate spot on the Burn Rate Chart.

To give you some idea:
30-30 170gr (H4198 20.5gr 1764fps start-22.5gr 1918fps max)
30-30 170gr (LVR 33gr 2145fps start-38.5C 2332fps max)

35 Rem 180gr (H4198 28gr 1971fps start-32gr 2172fps max)
35 Rem 180gr (LVR 40gr 2044fps start-45.0C 2302fps max)

Someone did pressure testing and found that Lever made it's Max Peak pressure 14 inches down the barrel. It was designed so it's pressure curve worked the best with the shorter barrels of Lever style guns. It also has a softer initial peak pressure at ignition than other powders for the same cartridges and a lower recoil. It likes heavier bullets and slightly compressed to compressed loads of powder. In the 30-30 and 35 Rem it works really well with cast bullets also.

I just wanted to give you some insight into my thought process. As for emailing Hodgdon, "We have not done any testing with the 357herret and can not advise it's (LVR) use in that cartridge"
