Smallbore Unlimited standing

The bullets may be smaller but not the challenge.

Smallbore Unlimited standing

Post by nutcase »

This is just a push for people...

So, when is somebody going to finally shoot a 40x40 in Unlimited standing? I have 8 people in the world records list that have shot 39x40, no perfect score yet!

This is my favorite class to shoot and my highest has been 36 once. I made the mistake of counting targets as I went along and was down 2 going into my last bank of rams. I got the first 3 and said to myself holy $@!t I shot an international score. The last 2 shots didn't even come close to the targets.

My setup is a 10" T/C blue match barrel with a 3" Ken light mount and a nikon 4-12 buckmaster rimfire scope. This barrel likes SK standard ammo.

What does the hold look like using a KL mount?

Using a rifle scope so right hand on the grip and left hand around the front bell of the scope. Both elbows bent, scope pulled close to the right eye and arms off the body.

If you are a lefty switch everything.

This standing shooting position is very similar to that of a typical rifle shooter. Right hand holds the grip and trigger. Support hand does the aiming by holding the front scope bell at eye level, rear of scope is about 3 inches from eye. Remarkably easy to transition from offhand rifle shooting. Makes indoor practice easy in all seasons with a good scoped pellet gun like the 46M.

Just like using peep sights in standing, the whole purpose is to bring the gun balance and center of gravity closer to your chest. Emphasis on arms CANNOT touch your body or the other arm, face or hat CANNOT touch the gun or scope.

This Pic shows the hold most people use. where to hold the gun with the left hand (reversed for lefties) will vary by shooter. Most will hold the Bell of the scope, others will hold around the adjustments and some put their hand through the hole in the mount.

On a related note, my Taco Hold guns have the scope canted a few degrees off vertical. I'm right handed, and canting the scope in the rings a few degrees clockwise forces my right hand/arm slightly away from my chest, assuring me of a legal position, clearly visible to others, when sighting thru squared and level crosshairs.

I was wondering about maintaining a legal separation from the inward arm. That was the impetus behind my question.
