.30 Carbine legal for Field Pistol?

Post by jmoore »

Probably an issue long decided, but one of our match directors wasn't sure. He noted that it isn't really a straight walled case and was originally a rifle round. Two disqualifiers per the rules, and it isn't mentioned specifically in Section VII, C.

Case length is OK, though.

Was about to buy a Contender with that barrel, but if I can't play with it a bit in FP at some point, then probably won't!

I seem to remember that the 30 Carbine is OK for Field Pistol but can't swear to it. It is actually a straight wall case. Though the case does taper from case head to case mouth, the sides are indeed straight. The case walls are not parallel but they are straight. When defining a straight wall case for hunting here in Louisiana the 45-70 is considered a straight wall case and it too is tapered. In my mind the term "straight wall case" as it applies to IHMSA Field Pistol rules was intended to exclude bottleneck cases with the exception of the allowed bottleneck cartridges mentioned in the rules. A request for clarification can be made to Dell Taylor.

The 9mm Luger is also a tapered case, and it is legal.
