2019 IHMSA World Championships
By Jim Fields - Match Director

The 2019 IHMSA World Championships held at the Oklahoma City Gun Club on July 12th thru the 20th, was a total success with 632 entries. We averaged 20 relays per day & our wireless auto-reset system kept everything running smoothly & our target painters did a great job as well.
Weather conditions for the first five days were below normal with an average temperature of 89 degrees. However wind conditions for the entire match were on the calm side as the scores below indicate.
With a 12 foot apron on the back side of our 403 ft. firing line, spotters & spectators were in the shade from morning into the very late afternoon.
As normal, shooters from as far away as Australia were in attendance & were greeted by our air-conditioned reloading facility 20 yards from the firing line & they took full advantage by reloading many rounds of their favorite calibers to be shot in this match. We certainly appreciate our International shooters for traveling great distances to shoot in our fantastic sport of handgun silhouette competition.
The ULTRA 500 match held on Saturday the 20th had a total of 33 entries, although there were no 40x40's shot but we did have one 39x40 scope shot by John Weaver, John also won the aggregate with a score of 73x80. If you've never participated in the ULTRA 500, you're missing something, dumping a full-size ram at over 1/4 mile away does something for you, believe me, its a great feeling.
One of the best, if not the best standing shooter in our sport, Joe Cullison did it again by winning the Iron Man award, fantastic shooting Joe.
Linda Lanning, Atwood, KS, won high lady in BB-UAS & Debbie Tessman also of Kansas won SB-UAS, both with 80x80's, great shooting gals.
Another highlight for our match, we had six (6) junior shooters ranging in age from 9 to 16 who competed in this match & a couple of them shot perfect scores, great shooting guys.
With low wind & excellent lighting conditions all week we had a total of seventy (72) 80x80's plus thirteen (13) 40x40's in AIR competition. WOW!!
Broken down, Big Bore, Revolver, (0), Production, (0), (that was unusual) Unlimited, four (4), BB 1/2 scale, six (6) & BB UAS, twelve (12)
In Small-bore, Production three (3), Revolver 0, Unlimited, seven (7) UASFS, (1/5) six (6) UFS, (1/5) (0) UAS, eighteen (18) PH Short, five (5) PH .22, seven (7) PH Long, two (2)
The 2020 IHMSA World Championship, for the 7th time in the past 9 years, again will be held here at the Oklahoma City Gun Club, tentative dates are set for July 17th thru the 25th. Make plans to attend that one for sure. Goal for next year is 700 entries.

I have one correction to the list above.
Jared Richards was the Small Bore Unlimited Standing Champion. I believe his score was 71x80.
Great shooting Jared.
Joe
Standing is my favorite category. (Not right in the head)

So Thursday I spent most of the day in the stat house, checking completed scorecards for correct math and recording scores on the membership cards. About mid afternoon, I was relieved and wandered out to the firing line to watch. There sits Warren Alkire, on the BB pigs, shooting his PH Long course gun, a TC in 7mm I think, and a AAA shooter having never fired a 80 in this discipline. Warren and I go back about 30 years when we both were struggling shooters on a tight budget, shooting the 357 Max for most of the events. With him in Texas, and me in Indiana, we only see each other once a year at best. As often is the case, Warren is sitting there by himself, binoculars nearby, spotting his own hits when the targets are reset, and then scrambling to make adjustments based on his own spotting.

So I sit down behind him, grab the binocs, confirm his target bank, and start calling his shots. He's shooting clean, I'm just walking him into getting the bullets in front of his crosshairs. At the end of the string, I tell him I'll be right back and head to the truck for my 20x Leupold spotting scope. We finish the pigs, Warren is shooting groups.

Turkeys is much the same. A shot here and there that goes a bit high and right, I stay on top of it and let him know where his shots are trending. Warren focuses on sight picture & trigger control, ends up shooting groups at 150m, fun to watch and call for him.

Rams start a bit shaky, hits, but not good hits. I call the shots, Warren makes adjustments. We chat after the first 5, make one more adjustment. Now we're shooting groups, and he's just stacking bullets. Pretty groups.

Warren goes clean, 80 x 80, doing it from AAA. He's happy, and I was happy I could contribute to it. 36 years of shooting silhouettes, one of the best days ever.
