Fluted TC Production barrels????

Post by 260 Striker »

I saw a post on FB where a person asked if a TC barrel built by MGM to the correct length would be Production legal if he/she ordered the barrel with flutes. I know original TC barrels were not fluted but I have seen MOAs with fluted barrels in Production, FAs shooting production Revolver classes with hex barrels so I guess the additional options for an MGM TC barrel should also be legal as long as the barrel was not over length. Just curious what answer would be here on the IHMSA forum and not on FB.

Was the MOA offered from the factory with a fluted barrel or was what you saw an aftermarket barrel?
In my opinion (and STRICTLY my opinion), if the factory offered a fluted barrel then a fluted aftermarket barrel should be allowable. If not, then no. That is the whole purpose of the strict production rules, to prevent an advantage (either real or perceived) in the utilization of aftermarket parts unless factory replacement parts are no longer available and then they are restricted to certain components of the gun. As an example, I believe that factory-made TC barrels, in 10-inch length, are no longer in production so aftermarket barrels are allowed.
All this being said, If I am in error then someone, please correct me.

The fluted barrel on the MOA was legal because it was offered by the factory that way.
Not so the TC, as it was never offered from them in a fluted form.

Good comments but now that TC no longer makes Production legal barrels the aftermarket manufacturers must be used. I wonder what accuracy advantage a fluted barrel is over a non-fluted barrel. To me this is more about cosmetics and would NOT enhance accuracy. Even the MGM and other TC barrel manufacturers offer different finishes that were never offered by TC. TC also made their Production legal barrels exactly 10" where many of the MGM Production legal barrels are 10 3/4" to meet the maximum length rule. So did the extra 3/4" give more accuracy advantage??? I'm sure there are many people on both sides of the fluting issue. Since MOAs and FAs shot in Production classes are potentially more accurate anyway flutes on a TC Production gun won't make that much difference accuracy wise but it will sure look good.

Hey, Lynn
I agree it is mostly cosmetic, although it seems to change the balance of the gun, for better or worse.
I have had both fluted and standard barrels on MOA’s, and saw no difference in accuracy.
No MOA’s or fluted barrels for me now, except the barrel on my UL gun

Yep, that’s another thing. I believe I remember that it costs $150 extra for fluting on an MOA barrel! :((
