45 Colt

Post by i26963 »

Anyone ever shoot the 45 Colt in a match?
I’ve got an FA I would like to try. It’s a 454 with a 45 Colt cylinder too.

Melvin,

Years ago in Ohio a friend had the same revolver/cylinder combo. He used the 45 Colt cylinder with great success. You will find it works well.

I tried a S&W625 with 200gr cast bullets in US once. Or twice? Not too bad except for 200m Rams. Rang most of the ones i hit. (Not a hot load, though. Probably at the time 8.0 gr of 231 under the SWC boolit. That or an IMR 800x load which runs a bit faster.)

Melvin early on (1980 or so) I used a Ruger BH 7 1/2'' in 45 Colt. I learned that SWC bullets lose 40 or more % of muzzle velocity. The harder you push the more they lose. The Ruger would stand heavy loads. It would also blister your bare hand with oversized Herrett grips. The advice is true---if you want 44mag loads----buy a 44mag. Rugers were not envisioned as target guns. They are well built but their sights were not helpful for IHMSA. rp

RP
I have a recently acquired a FA 454 Casull with a 45Colt and a 45ACP cylinder.
You know me , I love to experiment. I have a LBT mold for a 250 grain WFN bullet. The FA came with Bomar silhouette sights, so I think it will be fun to play with

Only in FP. 200 gr. SWCs and 7.0 gr of WW231 shot great in a 7 1/2 Blackhawk. But definitely not for BB.
