Contender caliber for flop

Post by braud357 »

A conversation with a friend today causes me to ask the following question - is there anyone out there using a Contender in BB UAS from the flop position. Looking for something that I can use with a rifle scope, so I fully realize that a muzzle brake will be a must-have. Looking for "real-world" experience - what combo might be the best choice. Please feel free to comment !

Philip, No flop experience but when I was shooting US I used a 270 Max barrel with brake and it had low recoil. 130 grain bullets would take rams 90% of the time.

I have a 7tcu with an integral brake. If I were to do it over. I would build a .223AI 1 in 7 twist with a JP brake.

UPDATE : Decision on flop TC has been made ! Thanks to my friend Melvin Calliham, I have a custom, fluted step 6 TCU barrel. 15" 1-8"twist' I am hoping to load this down enough to use with out a muzzle brake (I would hate to lose barrel length !) Stainless barrel, stainless frame, fitted with a Weaver T24 scope. Ready for load testing, going to first try powders on hand: AA2015, 748, IMR4064, and IMR4895. Melvin included some Nosler 107 gr. Custom Competition bullets, so those will be tried as well. I may have to modify this forend, and I have a shortened Pachmayr Gripper to use on it as well - full-size grip for load development. Wish me luck !
