XP Rear action screw???

Post by 260 Striker »

Getting ready to put a new stock on my XP and was wondering if the rear action screw is really needed if the action is bedded. I have inspected many XPs where the rear action screw had been removed and the shooters said it made no difference in accuracy. I suspect it was needed in the old plastic stocks but wonder what the value is, if any, in a new aftermarket stock with good bedding. Just wondering if any shooters have tried accuracy with and without the rear action screw. I had an XP years ago where the bolt would slightly bind if the rear screw was too tight but suspect the bedding was not right to put tension on the action. That short action should not flex that much because of the tiny screw. I had to run that back screw just snug but not tight.

have not seen much difference in accuracy, but I have seen a stock destroyed when he did not have the rear screw installed. the recoil ended up cracking the stock at the front screw.

probably is no problem with a 7BR or smaller, Bu any caliber larger, I would include the screw.

I bought my first custom stock from Jack Dever, I ask how hard it was to bed,he said not too bad,and even help me with it.
He said don't worry about the rear screw, because the action is a tight fit,and it's not needed!
Me I put in it anyway, and when I have XP's actions trued and blue printed,I have the rear screw drilled and tapped 1/4-28 like the front.Thats just me!
