.30 Carbine for Big Bore

Post by Richard Pickering »

Hello friends. Some have used the .30 Carbine for big bore. Does anyone still campaign this ? I have a friend who wants to go that way next year. Are there any critiques ? We would use the RCBS 165 Sil bullet. If need arises the Saeco 301 stands by to serve. Also this is for a TC Contender 10''-----if we can locate one. Thank you. rp

Hi Richard,

I shot a .30 carbine (in a 10" TC) in standing for a couple years and it did a great job. Can't remember my loads but I remember I was using a 130 grain for chickens pigs and turkeys and a 150 for rams. This was before the days of taco and peep and I shot it weaver stance. It worked well and took all the animals. I gave it up because with the loads I was using, I had to trim the brass every single time I shot. Being a fairly lazy indinvidual, I decided that was too time consuming and switched to 32-20.

Hi Jim, Thanks for your review. We have located a barrel----thanks to Ronny Brown in N.C., with a primary assist from Melvin Calliham. It is good to have well placed friends who know where all the stuff is stashed.

If I recall correctly Phillip Braud used one in Standing for a long time. Perhaps he will post on the matter.

I have a PDF of an article from the Jan-Feb 1990 IHMSA News that a lot of big bore load info for the 30 Carbine. I used one for several years in the 90's. Shoot me a message if you would like me to send you the article.

.30 Carbiner, If you have the article on ''The little .30s'' by the late Ed Bulick, I have that. ( Several others and I assisted Ed in compiling data for that.) RP
For the moment I believe we are going to campaign the RCBS 165 Sil. and 10.5gr 4227.
