Ruger SBH Sight/load nightmare

Post by hardtoseeovergut »

Where to begin........

"Back in the day", a quarter century ago, I loaded Hornady 240 JTC-SIL over 24.9 gr of 296 in my Super Black Hawk and it shot well.

Then shot WC-820 but that powder is long gone.

My front sight was damaged and Ruger's awesome customer service sent me a new front sight but it's significantly taller.

I loaded a box using new 296, 24.5 gr under a Hornady 240 XTP and Lee factory crimp die.

Shot it today starting with old sight settings of 11, 14, 21, 29

Trying to adjust sights thru course of fire settings ended up being 28, 38, 53 and 63 clicks at rams and were still low!

The rear sight was adjusted so high that there was virtually no tension on rear sight screw, basically ran out of rear sight elevation.

Was LUCKY to end up with a 7, yes 7.

I really want to support Ruger since they are such a good sponsor but this is frighteningly frustrating.

Any suggestions?

I've got 4 or 5 Ruger SA and I think every one the front sight is a defferent hight
Maybe a call to Ruger might reward you with a shorter sight

JRS, Ask for a front sight for a 10" 22 auto and/or a front sight for a BM10 357SM revolver. BM10 sight is a little narrower and the 22 auto sight is just a hair shorter. Measure your old sight and send me a pm with the measurement. I have several extra Ruger front sights.

Hardtosee, try what 260 striker said, put the sight off of a Ruger .22 auto on it.
I had the same problem, fixed it for me. However, I just located a Bomar rear and globe
front set, and have put them on, now. Just gotta sight it in.

This certainly has been a learning experience. Ruger doesn't make their front sights, they contract them out!

I was unable to find out why there is such a relatively large variation in the same part number over the years.

I am disappointed the 10 1/2 Super Blackhawk is being relegated to "Short range" configuration with iron sights.

Hopefully I can find a bomar/globe combo sometime before my eyes poop out.

I will reply to you striker in a minute, I appreciate your help!

With my spotter/shooting partner leaving for college in 3 weeks finances will be tight for the next 4 years.

Contender hooded front sights fit. I put 1 on my SBH but I had to file the post down a good bit due to a tall mounting block. The rear sight is a Bowen. Really nice sight.

Ruger Customer Service is OUTSTANDING!

I called Ruger on Monday afternoon about my sight issue. Gave them the measurements of the replacement sight they sent that I ran out of elevation with.
Parts was down to one guy and it was late so the lady at Ruger said she would do her best first thing Tuesday morning.

My phone rang Tuesday at 8:30am, it was Ruger! She said she scoured and asked around and a technician had one of the old style that was on my SBH in the back of his work bench drawer! She asked me when the ECC started and I told her Thursday but I could use my DW. I asked how much and she said no charge.

Today, Wednesday, received an overnight packet from Ruger!

The first replacement that ran out of adjustment on Rams is on the right, the one like my original sight is on the left. I am floored. After total no response from Browning earlier this year and S&W saying they wouldn't work on my T/C frame I guess my expectations were diminished. Now I am freaking out to load 44 ammo for my SBH for the ECC.

Thank you Ruger, you guys rock!
