The 30 and 35 Herrett were wonderful in their day in the Contender. Was there ever a discussion about necking it down further to 7mm? Seems like it would be (too) similar to 7TCU and 7BR.

The 7R and 7x30 waters are necked down 30-30 based cartridges - hope this what you are looking for.

Re: 7mm Herrett?
I asked the TC Custom Shop years ago if they would chamber a 7mm Herrett but since it was not a standardized cartridge they would not do it. The 7US by E. Arthur Brown is about as close as you will get to a 7 Herrett. The 7US is a very accurate cartridge. The Custom Shop would not even chamber a 7US. I think they considered it one of their competitors cartridges. I have formed a 7 Herrett from 30 Herrett and it looks like it would be a great cartridge, especially for cast bullets. Try a 7US.

Re: 7mm Herrett?
You might consider the .270 Maximum. Based on the 357 Max, case length is same as 30 Herrett but slightly smaller case diameter (about .030" smaller I think). With 130-140 grain bullets it is pretty effective, and dies are available on the used market. I've been using it in my MOA and a 15" TC and really like it. Sold an extra TC barrel and dies last summer. You can go as light as 90 grain bullets, but the 150's keyhole in my guns. Probably not a fast enough twist. The 115 grainers have really mild recoil.

Re: 7mm Herrett?
64xp to some what answer your ?. I read back in the day
Were Steve / Bob said he/ they picked the 30 and then the 35 because of the bullets made at that time
These two offered the best for his needs which was for hunting. Which was for the most part what
Both were design for. And with the Silhouette crowd I'm sure someone had thought. But like you said with the
The TCU and Br both rimless being better suited for the bolt gun I guess we now know the rest of the story
But heck what do I know I mite have just dreamed this

Re: 7mm Herrett?
I had just what you're talking about. It was an old Merrill barrel. It used a 225 Winchester case (Jim Rock liked them for the higher pressures),trimmed to the 1.60, like the Herrett. It was called the 7 Rocket, not like the newer version, which is the 225 case untrimmed, just necked up.
I did shoot my first deer with it with great results.

Re: 7mm Herrett?
The 7US by EABrown appears to be 357H necked to 7mm. Length, angle, and diameter are nearly identical. May consider that for next Contender.

Re: 7mm Herrett?
Like knife handler said, it was the 7mm Rocket. I had one of the "XLs" and sold it because the trigger on the guns being made at the time (1980) were almost unusable. I kept the dies though. I keep thinking about having a t/c barrel chambered for it. I believe it would still be legal for production.

Re: 7mm Herrett?
I think the "classic" series of cartridges are basically a 25, 6.5mm, 7mm, etc Herrett. They look necked down 30 Herretts not 357 Herretts to me. MGM chambers for them and dies are available from Varmint Den I think it is. They're the ones that promoted the rounds.

Re: 7mm Herrett?
I ordered my first MOA in 85, it was in 7 rocket,at that time I was shooting the 7 rocket in an XP 100, Machine work done by Fred Frankenberg.I still see Fred and talk to him regularly. He was one of our best shooters in his day.
