Rebarrel 221 XP-100 with what?

Post by 64XP-100 »

I have a newer vintage XP-100 in 221 FB that I would like to rebarrel for BB. The most inexpensive method is to keep the same bolt face.

What are the best options for a cartridge? 7TCU, 300 Blackout/Whisper, and 30-223 would seem to top the list. Any experience or suggestions?

6.5 BR, a great BB & HS clambering with Sierra 142 grain bullets. You will not be disappointed!

Uhh, steve, that won't work without a bolt change!

221FB is a 223 bolt face.

Best bet though is 7TCU

Cartridge with most options would be the 7TCU. Cheap brass, enough power for sticky rams, cheaper bullets, than 6.5 and dies would be easier to find, read cheaper than 6.5 TCU. Would be a great cast bullet gun too. The first XP I had built was in 7TCU by Barry Brown and that was a great shooting gun. Like a dummy I sold it and current owner won't sell it back. Also the recoil is very mild from the 7TCU. Sounds like a good project.

7 TCU would certainly be the easiest and quite possibly the best choice.
There is also a 30 TCU but much harder to find dies for.
Have fun with your project.

I went with 7TCU when I rebarreled my Fireball and have never regretted it.

The 300 Whisper was not alive at the time I had my 7TCU XP built and would surely consider that today if building another XP. I like cast bullets and think a Whisper XP with a 1 in 8" twist would work great with heavy cast bullets. You wouldn't have the flatter trajectory of a 7TCU but would still be fun to play with. I have several 7mm mould blocks and would still lean toward a 7TCU if I didn't feel the urge for a Whisper XP. Of course a person could always get another XP and have both that way!!! I guess that is why I have three bolt guns today.

I own (2) small bolt face XP100's - one is a 300x221 (300 Whisper), and one is a 7 TCU. Realistically speaking, the 7 TCU is probably more practical, but I enjoy shooting the 300x221 more ! My suggestion to you would be the 7 TCU - cannot go wrong with that choice ! :-bd
