Silhouette in Southern Oregon

Post by jbolt »

Moving to the Grants Pass area in a few years and looking for silhouette venues of any type.
So far all I can find is:

JSCA, (close) Indoor air pistol (looks like they used to do more pistol?)
COSSA (4 hr drive) BB, SB, 1/2 scale, 1/5th scale (rifles okay)
Hat Creek (3 hr drive) NRA Hunters Pistol, Lever gun rifle, small bore rifle & high power rifle.

Wondering if there were any other venues in between?

Hello Jbolt, I think you have it just about right.
Grants Pass used to have an outstanding program shooting BB, SB, FP, 1/2 and 1/5 scale, broken up into 2 one day matches a month and then they had the West Coast Championship each year.
Participation at the monthly matches dwindled to the point that they could not afford the target setters and it was no longer worth it to shoot. So they dropped everything but Air.

The Bend matches are great. $5 per gun and we set our own targets but we will take care of anyone that cannot set their own targets.

I sure miss the Grants Pass matches. I used to go twice a month.
If you have the desire to restart the matches in Grants Pass... anything is possible.
Be well

The targets are still available at Grants Pass. If interested in starting up the club again please PM me. FYI, I am in the process of moving to S. AZ near Tucson and plan to be there permanently July/August of 2019.

My current plan is to make the move permanently as soon as my kids are out of college which should be in the summer of 2021. We bought a house in Hugo back in August and currently have it rented until we move.

Did JSCA do any lever gun silhouette along with the pistol? I run the silhouette matches for our club which is small bore rifle, small bore lever gun / field pistol and pistol cartridge lever gun / field pistol. We only have a 100 meter range. My small bore rifle matches are well attended but we struggle with attendance for the lever gun and field pistol.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving it a go at restarting matches at that time if it is still feasible.

Jay. We allowed small.bore & big bore lever rifles. Big bore had to use cast billets.

Excellent! How was the range laid out as far as number of banks and shooting positions? I'm assuming they still have rails or stands for the targets?

All the rails are in perfect shape. 3 banks of SB & 3 of BB. We would set 2 SB & 1 FP & 2 BB & 1 HS. We may have sold the 1/5 scale targets. Unsure of that.

I may have the pieces in the garage to put together a set of 1/5 scale.
I will do whatever I can to help when the time comes.
Thank you for asking.

Thanks Guys. We have a pretty good stock pile of fifth scale so a few may follow me when I go.

If I can make it work I will schedule one of our trips up to the area on a match day and stop by for a meet and greet.

Jay,

It would sure be sweet if you could get the range going again in Grants Pass, I really enjoyed the time that we had and planning the trip from year to year to attend the WCC's that Steve Ware -- ^:)^ put together. Great place and definitely a great group of guys that showed up to shoot and have a good time. It even sweetened the deal to attend because the Austrailian team would visit the WCC match and it sure brought a grin to my face to see these guys come out and play. :ymparty:
